The Rose Tattoo: About The Show

The Rose Tattoo starring Marisa Tomei was first presented at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016 and was received positively by the masses. It was the third revival of the play that was originally staged in 1951. The play has since won 5 Tony Awards. It is written by Tennessee Williams, a contemporary of the likes of Arthur Miller and Eugene O'Neill. The production has been directed by Yale graduate Trip Cullman. He has previously directed theatre gems like Adam Bock's The Drunken City and Sarah Schulman's Manic Flight Reaction.

This revival of The Rose Tattoo is being produced by Roundabout Theatre Company. The play has been around for over six decades despite the controversial start it had in Ireland in 1957. The themes of women’s liberation and sexual repression were far ahead of its time during the play’s early days. When juxtaposed with the context and the time of its inception, the shock value still manages to shine through today.

The Rose Tattoo : Broadway Story

The play has a Sicilian woman by the name of Serafina at its forefront. She has three children and lives in a cottage with them at the Louisiana Gulf Coast. The titular rose tattoo is originally on her husband’s chest and it is established to be of symbolic significance in the first act of the play. After her husband’s unfortunate fate, Serafina is thrust into an unfamiliar world where her life wouldn’t be as easy as it was. She will need to become the primary provider for her children and take care of the household.

The developments in her growing children’s lives also bring out the ugly side of her character. The story impeccably portrays how Serafina progresses to forget her own needs and desires in search of stability in the household. The play has been criticized for being lewd during the 50s, but it is just another device that drives the plot home. The symbol of the rose and the tattoo appears throughout the play, tying the plots and subplots together.

The Rose Tattoo Reviews

“By ditching the burnt-to-ashes godlike image of her late husband and embracing Mangiacavallo's flawed but loving heart, Serafina springs back to life. Niccolai's highly burnished performance makes that transformation thrilling and soulful.”
- Chicago Tribune

“In this very juicy play, Serafina’s steamy saga couldn’t feel more vibrant, immediate or combustible. Vinkler orchestrates Williams’ alternately comic and melodramatic potboiler with aplomb.”
- Stage and Cinema
