‘The wall keeps out the enemy, And we build the wall to keep us free’

As the tunes of Why We Build The Wall ring out in Hadestown, the jarring allegory hits you, of myth meeting reality. Anaïs Mitchell uses the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to create a parallel on Earth that is stressing out from climate change, border politics, unemployment, and greedy politicians. The musical with beautiful lyrics and music from a range of genres including pop, jazz, and soul, narrates both the pressing demands of the age against the desires of two couples ‘Orpheus and Eurydice and Persephone and Hades’. Watch Hadestown this spring in Broadway, a radical musical whose story and music will linger in your mind for a long time.

Hadestown is entirely the genius of Anaïs Mitchell who has written the book, composed the music and wrote the lyrics too! Rachel Chavkin supports her as the director, who has previous productions to her credit like Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812. David Neumann is in charge of the choreography, while the moody sets are created by Rachel Hauck. The talented cast includes Reeve Carney, Patrick Page, André De Shields, Amber Gray, and Eva Noblezada. Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer, and Kay Trinidad will play the fates. The production runs in two acts for 2 hours 30 minutes.

Hadestown: Broadway Story

Hadestown is not about Satan’s hell, but the proverbial post-apocalyptic hell humans are bent on creating on Earth in the future. Orpheus and Eurydice are a young couple who make promises of undying love to each other, but Eurydice is concerned about their future and financial stability. Persephone joins them in the summertime and celebrates all that life is known for; she doesn’t want to go back underground to her husband Hades and his industrial hell hole.

Hades’ wealth disillusions Persephone, but he wants someone who appreciates its importance. So, Eurydice follows him to Hadestown where she signs a contract to stay and work in this town that offers stability, a contrast from her life with Orpheus. But soon she realizes it’s not as simple; meanwhile, Orpheus goes to Hadestown to get her back. Watch the brilliant musical to find out if he meets the same fate as the mythical Orpheus and if the couples are reunited.
