Well, you don't have to do that anymore because - Broadway Lottery Tickets

Winning a Broadway Lottery Ticket and watching the show adds onto the excitement and works light on your pocket as well! Here's our detailed guide on Broadway Lottery Tickets, how you can win them, the shows they are applicable for etc. Read on, and you never know ; you might just get lucky!

What is Broadway Lottery?

While there are multiple ways to get discounted Broadway tickets, one popular and exciting way is to particiapte in the lottery for Broadway tickets.

As the name suggests, you can enter your name in a raffle organized by the theatre or register on a third-party website or the show's website. Winning names are picked at random, and those that win the lottery get tickets for the show (usually the Orchestra section) for a nominal price.

Today, at a cost of $25 - $40 you can bag front row orchestra tickets to some of the top shows on Broadway. A true steal deal we say!

How Broadway Lottery Works

Broadway lotteries mostly take place about 2 hours before showtime. You have a 30-minute window to enter for lottery and winners are offered one or two tickets. Note, you must be physically present to claim them, or hard luck! Winning the lottery does not mean free Broadway tickets, but you do get to buy them at heavily discounted rate. There have been cases when Broadway shows have held their ticket lotteries at local stores (such as McDonald's and the M&Ms Store), but in general, these lotteries are held at the show's box office, at the theatre, online at the official website or on mobile phones.

Also note, Broadway Lotteries are different from RUSH tickets, which are sold only at the box office on the day of the show, sometimes only for students.

Types Of Broadway Lottery Tickets

1. Digital Broadway Lottery- Tickets Usually Around $25-$40

With everything going digital, Broadway Lottery Tickets jumped on the bandwagon and is now digital too. This is perhaps the most convinient option and all it requires you to do is log in when the lottery for the show you'd like opens, register for it and go about your day until you're notified a couple hours before the show whether you've won or not. In order to see the Lottery opening times, you can download the TodayTix app and jump in for registration accordingly.Winners have a 60 minute window to claim and pay for their tickets online with a credit card and in most cases, the winner gets a double pass.

2. In-Person Lottery - Tickets Usually Around $25-$40

While this was the only form of getting a Broadway Lottery Ticket in the past, it is decreasingly becoming unpopular due to the shift to digital means. However, some theatres still prefer going old school and offer this service. This works like a typical lottery wherein you have to fill out a piece of paper with your name and the number of tickets you need (you are allowed 1 or 2) and drop it into the ballot ( maybe peck your paper for luck!). The Box Office starts taking names for the lottery 30 minutes prior to the drawing time listed on the schedule, so make sure you reach on time. Visiting on in-person Broadway Lottery is an experience you should try at least once, so keep this as Plan B in case the digital lottery does not work in your favour.!

3. Mobile Lottery - Tickets Usually Around $25-$35

Broadway has not just gone digital, but mobile too. If you're running short on time, download the TodayTix mobile app and enter the lottery for select Broadway and Off Broadway shows. Atleast 3 to 6 shows are announced on lottery daily at midnight and you have about 4 hours before curtain raise to submit an entry via your phone. Sometimes, you also get a plus 1 entry by sharing your submission on Facebook or Twitter. For mobile lottery, winners are notified via email or push notification and you'll be required to pay via the app or at the box office, depending on the theatre. Note, these app based lotteries require your contact details so be prepared to be spammed with mails and offers even after you finish your show.

Note, for in-person lotteries you have to be there to accept your ticket and for the online version you’re usually given a set period of time to accept and purchase the tickets before it’s offered to someone else.

Improve your Chances of Winning Broadway Lottery Tickets!

  • Showing up early doesn’t better your chances. You can show up at 5:50 for a 6 p.m. drawing and win.
  • Popular shows have the busiest lottery lines, for obvious reasons. You could try on Wednesday, for weekend matinees or bad weather days for better chances of winning
  • Shows that provide lottery tickets do it for every performance of the show, so if not one show, enroll yourself for the next lottery slot. It also helps that lottery start times are scattered through the day, but you might need to plan this out better.
  • This is speculation from our end, but we have noticed that people drawing the lottery tickets draw from the same depth of the ballot. One strategy would be to get there early and scattered your group through the line so that your slips are in different places! Too much, but try maybe?
  • If 2 Broadway shows have the same posted lottery drawing time, then you and your partner/friends should split up as each person is usually allowed to buy 2 tickets if they win the lottery tickets.
  • Many theatres accept only cash for these specially priced Broadway Lottery Tickets. Make sure you bring enough just incase you win! ( this holds true only for in-person lottery tickets)
  • If you're dead set on seeing a particular show and don't want to leave things to luck, it's best to opt for RUSH tickets or look at other ways to get discounted Broadway tickets.

Perhaps the only downside of Broadway Lottery Tickets is that they are only available on the day-of-the-show and you must be physically present to enter the lottery. However, plan your day well and you should be good to go!

Lastly, if you don't win, applaud for the others. Maybe karma might work in your favour, if not for luck!
