West Side Story at Broadway Theatre after King Kong’s run!

The West Side Story is set to take the stage again at the Broadway Theatre. It is still recognized as one of the greatest shows to ever grace the Broadway scene. It is the brainchild of stalwarts Jerome Robbins, Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, and Stephen Sondheim. 62 years after its first run, West Side Story is equally appealing to the masses and relevant to the time. The story centers around the theatrical tropes of love and betrayal. The show has had two Broadway revivals after its successful first run. It has also previously taken UK's West End by storm with Jerome Robbins's production.

The 2019 revival will feature Isaac Powell, Shereen Pimentel, and Amar Ramasar in leading roles under the direction of Ivo van Hove of The Crucible-fame. You can sense a buzz around this production ever since it was announced that there would be as many as 23 debutantes in the cast. The West Side Story comes hot on the heels of an incredibly successful run of the King Kong musical. The show was concocted in Australia and opened on October 5, 2018, for previews. King Kong finished its run on August 18, 2019, after 29 previews and 323 regular performances. The show expected to play in China, Japan, and Spain in the next few years.

Broadway-Theatre-Seating-Chart

The Broadway production of King Kong was directed by Olivier Award-winning director-choreographer Drew McOnie and writer Jack Thorne, who also wrote Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Marius de Vries of Moulin Rouge-fame has composed the music for King Kong. Despite its heavyweight production crew, the real show-stealer of the musical, unsurprisingly, was a 20-foot-high puppeteer-operated monster, which weighed over 2000 pounds. The puppet brought the production a Special Tony Award for Sonny Tilders and Creature Technology Company. The musical also received Tony nominations for Best Sound Design, Best Scenic Design, and Best Lighting Design of a Musical.
