King Lear : Broadway Story

The King Lear Broadway production will perform for a limited run for 19 weeks from April 4th, 2019 to July 7th, 2019. The play is directed by Sam Gold, a two-time Tony Award Director (Doll’s House 2 and Fun Home) and features Glenda Jackson, a Triple Crown winner (Academy, Emmy, and Tony awards) fresh from the success of ‘Three Tall Women.’ It’s a unique challenge as Glenda plays the titular male role of King Lear, which has for centuries been a coveted role for actors across media. She will be supported by a talented cast including Jayne Houdyshell, Elizabeth Marvel, Aisling O’Sullivan, Pedro Pascal, and Ruth Wilson.

More than 4 centuries later, the tragedy of King Lear and his daughters continues to engage audiences. King Lear, written by William Shakespeare, was first performed in 1605 and has been adapted for film, TV, and theatre innumerable times. The story revolves around King Lear and his daughters, Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia. The King decides to distribute his kingdom to his daughters and yearns to receive praise in return.

The King’s elder daughters Goneril and Regan comply with his expectations and receive their share. However, his favorite and youngest daughter Cordelia doesn’t wax eloquent which enrages the King, and he gives her share to his other daughters. She doesn’t protest and accepts her fate while his other daughters take him for a fool and don’t care about him. What follows next is treachery and involvement of dukes and nobles for the throne. Watch King Lear to find out what happens to him and Cordelia.
