Jagged Little Pill | Musical debuts on Broadway

The Broadhurst Theater will host Jagged Little Pill on Broadway. The closing date for the show has not been announced yet.

After an agonizing wait, Jagged Little Pill has finally begun its Broadway stint with previews on November 3, 2019. The production had previously held a world premiere at the American Repertory Theater of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The show was praised by audiences and critics alike. Jagged Little Pill had generated a lot of buzz over the past few months owing to the crew of stalwarts that have collaborated on the project. The musical is directed by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus who has previously overseen Broadway hits like Waitress and Pippin. The musical is based on the original story by Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody who has names like Juno and Tully in his filmography. Apart from this, the musical also features lyrics by seven-time Grammy Award-winner Alanis Morissette. She has collaborated with six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard for the music of Jagged Little Pill. The crew also comprises of Beyoncé collaborator Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Tony and Pulitzer-winner Tom Kitt.

Jagged Little Pill was conceptualized from the music that is featured in the production. Despite the obvious risks associated with such an infrastructure, the musical combines the talents of the cast and the crew to avoid the pitfalls. The story is that of a multi-racial suburban family facing the kind of odds that are the lifeblood of any family drama. The plot unfolds the narrative of the family over a number of generations. Jagged Little Pill addresses a number of issues that plague a run-of-the-mill suburban family, including gender and sexual fluidity, addiction, race relations, and cyber-bullying to name a few.

The musical, however, is far from a cynical take on modern society. It focuses on the “despite” instead of limiting itself to the “because” of things. All of this is effortlessly achieved owing to the well thought out casting. The talented cast of Jagged Little Pill comprises of Kathryn Gallagher, Celia Rose Gooding, Derek Klena, Sean Allan Krill, Lauren Patten, and Elizabeth Stanley, among others.
