West End

Dominion Theatre London – Now Playing The Prince of Egypt

Last Updated On

One of the largest West End theatres, with over 2000 seats, the Dominion Theatre opened as a cinema in October 1929. Along with playing movies, the theatre also had a lot of live performances - some of the more popular names to have performed at the venue include Duran Duran, U2, and David Bowie. The Dominion Theatre is now part of the Nederlander Organization, which along with operating 9 theatres in Broadway, owns three theatres in West End (the other two being Aldwych Theatre and Adelphi Theatre).

It was almost demolished in 1991, but was saved by aggressive campaigning and has played host to musicals almost exclusively since – shows from Grease, to the record-breaking run of We Will Rock You, The Bodyguard, and was also home to the Broadway-transfer of An American in Paris. In February 2020, the theatre will host The Prince of Egypt.

Our Dominion Theatre London guide is designed to give you all the information you need to pick the best seats in the theatre.

The Prince of Egypt, based on the acclaimed 1998 movie of the same name, is scheduled to run at the Dominion Theatre for a period of 32 weeks, starting February 2020. When the Dreamworks Animation film released over two decades ago, it turned out to be the highest grosser Non-disney animated film. The music and lyrics of the stage adaptation are being handled by Stephen Schwartz himself, reprising his role from the original. As one would expect, the Oscar-winning song 'When You Believe; will be featured on the show along with other favorites such as 'All I Ever Wanted', 'Through Heaven's Eyes', 'Deliver Us', and many more.

The Story

Fearing the orders of Pharaoh Seti to eradicate Hebrew boys from the society, a mother places her newborn child in a basket and sets him afloat on the Nile. The Pharaoh's wife, Queen Tuya adopts the infant and names him Moses. He grows up to be a prince oblivious to his actual parentage, alongside Ramses. Moses is not fond the treatment meted out to Hebrews by the Egyptians, however, he is unable to do much about it.

Eventually, Moses learns of his past and he condemns his father's attitude towards the Hebrews. In an unlikely incident, he accidentally pushes an Egyptian guard to his death while trying to save an elderly Hebrew slave. He runs away from the palace into the desert and while in exile, he decides that he needs to lead the way for Hebrews to attain their freedom. Watch the show to find out what follows.
