Guide to the Dear Evan Hansen show on Broadway

Last Updated:

There is a bit of Evan Hansen in all of us. His character represents something most people can all relate to in one way or another, and, as a result, the musical is astonishingly compelling. Evan Hansen, is a lonely, socially awkward teenager, who encounters a dilemma when he inadvertently becomes a social media sensation. As the play dives deeper and deeper into the psyche of Hansen, we begin to see that his character represents the kindness that is often terribly absent from high school hallways.

This hit new musical pairs three time Tony Award-nominated director, Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal, Grey Gardens), with the Tony-nominated composing team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (A Christmas Story, Dogfight, NBC’s SMASH), and award-winning playwright Steven Levenson (Showtime’s Masters of Sex). Dear Evan Hansen: Story

A letter that was never meant to be seen; a lie that was never meant to be told; a life he never dreamed he could have. All his life, Evan Hansen felt invisible. But when a tragic event shocks the community and thrusts him into the center of a rapidly evolving controversy, Evan is given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to finally fit in. Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, “Dear Evan Hansen” is a new American musical about life and the way we live it.

Dear Evan Hansen Reviews

Dear Evan Hansen belongs in that pantheon of musicals that lovers of the form seek to experience over and over again."
Washington Post

"Extraordinary and Thrillingly Contemporary. This astonishing and intensely beautiful new musical not only understands what it means to be 17 years old today, it observes with singular honesty how warped our understanding of community has become. With a spectacularly rich book and a score that brings tears to your eyes, it’s the best Broadway show of the year."
Chicago Tribune
