Company is a revival of the 1970 musical of the same name -- but this time, with gender roles reversed. The show was well-received in London when it opened last year and will arrive on Broadway next spring. The original production won six Tonys, including best new musical in 1971 and has since been revived twice, most recently in 2006. While the original version centered around a male protagonist, the new production involves a female protagonist celebrating her 35th birthday -- implicitly introducing a ticking biological clock into her single life. Similarly, other gender roles from the original story lines have also been swapped: the traditional married couple now sees a stay-at-home husband and a bread-winning wife, while one of the show’s signature songs, ‘Getting Married Today,’ -- which is about last-minute wedding jitters -- is performed by a gay man and not a straight woman as seen in the original.

The revival is directed by Marianne Elliott, a celebrated British director who won Tony Awards for ‘War Horse’, ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’ and a fresh version of ‘Angels in America’.

Drama Desk and Tony Award-winning playwright George Furth originally wrote a set of eleven one-act plays to be played by the 1950s actress Kim Stanley. The script piqued director Anthony Perkins’s interest in directing the show. Perkins, together with producer Harold Prince and Sondheim, decided to turn it into a fantastic musical about the struggles of upper-middle class marriages in New York. Tony Award and Grammy Award winner Katrina Lenk and two-time Tony Award and two-time Grammy Award winner Patti LuPone join forces in Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s groundbreaking musical comedy. The show features some of Sondheim’s award-winning songs, such as “You Could Drive a Person Crazy”, “The Ladies Who Lunch”, “Side by Side by Side” and “Being Alive”.

Company: The Musical

Birthdays are supposed to be joyous occasions for people; but not for Bobbie. At her 35th birthday party, Bobbie realizes that she does not quite have life figured out, unlike her married friends who seem to be put-together. Bombarded with questions like “Why aren’t you married yet?”, “Why can’t you find the right man” and “Isn’t it time to settle down and start a family?” by her friends, Bobbie attends a series of dinner parties and dates to find answers. Company attempts to portray the ups and downs of navigating through life in New York City. Each vignette is colored with brilliant music and smart, quick humor. Bobbie’s story shows that you’re never too old to discover yourself and figure out life.
