Bucket-list things to do in Dubai

It’s undeniable that Dubai promises wonders to its visitors, essentially offering unique bucket-list experiences that are impossible to find elsewhere. Stand on top of the world with your Burj Khalifa tickets, or experience the future of AR or VR with Museum of the Futuretickets. Dive deep into the world’s deepest man-made pool at Deep Dive Dubaior test your adventurous spirit during a Dubai Desert Safari and then camp under a starry night. One for the views? Choose amongst many observation decks in Dubai like Dubai Frame, Sky Views Observatory, the View at the Palm, and enjoy the dazzling sunset or sunrise views. Swim amongst sharks at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo or amongst the Dolphins at Atlantis. Relax with the blossoming scents of fresh flora with Dubai Miracle Garden tickets. Regardless, you’ll be making memories in the City of Gold.

Offbeat things to do in Dubai

While Dubai’s one of the most happening cities in the world, take a break from the mainstream activities and attractions and delight yourself in these off-beat sites and experiences worthy of your list of things to do in Dubai. Those looking to shop at authentic places should hit up the many souks like the Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Perfume Souk, Naif Souk, Textile Souk and more dotted across Dubai before retreating away from the hustle and bustle to the shell-laden Jumeirah Beach. Coffee connoisseurs should huddle up in the Coffee Museum of Dubai and treat their taste buds to a variety of available coffee and connect with experts within the premises. Coming to treating your senses, satisfy your visual appetite with a ArtBus tour that takes you to Dubai’s famous art centers. A perfect treat for art-lovers, we reckon.

Nightlife in Dubai

You’re missing out on the quintessential Dubai experience if you don’t enjoy a slice of its nightlife. Go above and beyond with rooftop clubs and bars like CÉ LA VI Dubai, Level 43 Sky Lounge and more, that offer the backdrop of the Dubai skyline while you sip on your favorite tipple (perfect of the bon vivant)! Simply looking for a luxurious meal? Head on over to the 53 for a dinner show with a view. However, should you fancy yourself some peace and quiet, stargazing in the desert offers a far more natural twinkling source of light for you to gaze upon or simply bask in  a serene cruise at night in the Marina

Local favorites in Dubai

The secret of a truly successful stay in Dubai is living like a local for at least a couple of hours. Shop from a local market in the early hours of dawn. Indulge in mouth-watering  delicacies like shawarmas, Machboos, Chebab, Samboosas, and more before you dip your toes in the waters of the Jumeirah Beach and enjoy the sunset. If you’re artsy you can check out the local art scene at Alserkal Avenue. Nature-loving locals tune into activities like watching flamingos at Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary or enjoying a nature trail at Mushrif Park. And if you’re looking to brush up on your history during your time as a ‘local’,tour through the Al Fahidi neighborhood. Some may even say it’s like walking from Dubai’s past to its future.

Shopping in Dubai

While Dubai exudes wealth down to the ‘T’, the city has an abundance of retail offerings for luxury and budget-buyer alike. Two of the main attractions in the city, the world’s largest shopping mall, the Dubai Mall, or the Mall of the Emirates, offer an eclectic mix of high-end and budget brands. Visit the traditional souks that are a far cry from the cosmopolitan departmental stores and offer authentic local products. Some souks to look out for include: the Gold Souk, Spice Souk, Perfume Souk, Naif Souk, Textile Souk and more. For budget buys, Dubai Flea Market or Dubai Outlet Mall offer quality retail options at the best of prices. Be it a local market or an extravagant mall, Dubai’s shopping scene is an experience on its own.

Kid-Friendly experiences in Dubai

Apart from architectural wonders, or record breaking attractions, what makes Dubai a holistic holiday spot is its surplus experiences curated for kids. Treat your little ones to a huge snow park in the middle of the desert with your Ski Dubai tickets or indulge in a special environment to learn about, feed and interact with animals by booking  Dubai Safari Park tickets. Rather stay indoors? Explore the world’s largest indoor theme park with your IMG World tickets or teleport into the world of virtual reality with your VR Park Dubai tickets. Rest assured, it will be a day well spent.  For kids bubbling with energy, spend a day at one of the many theme parks in Dubai or water parks in Dubai. Ride the thrills on rides inspired by your favorite Hollywood heroes with your Motiongate Dubai tickets or beat the heat at Dubai’s biggest waterpark and all its 30-plus slippery slides and rides and more with your Aquaventure Water Park tickets. Dubai for kids is a never ending saga of adventure.

Budget-friendly things to do in Dubai

Dubai can be hard on the wallet if you’re a tourist there, however, there’s no end to the number of fun things you can do on a budget either. If you’re looking for free things to do in Dubai, choose to visit the beaches in Dubai, like the Marina Beach, White Beach, Black Palace Beach, Kite beach and more. If you’re a romantic at heart on a tight budget, head to the Love Lake in the Al Qudra desert. Visiting the Dubai Frame, the Dubai Museum, and the Jumeirah Mosque are all exciting activities you can partake in without worrying about the expenses. Should you fancy a musical show, the Dubai Fountain show is a must-watch experience or watch the camels race it out as you place mental bets at the Al Marmoom track. Should you desire a spark of adventure, visit the buried village of Al Madam, just 37 miles from Dubai and explore the ghost village and all its legacies.

Romantic things to do in Dubai

If you’re traveling to Dubai with your paramour and want to give them some unforgettable memories, then you’re in luck! There’s a whole host of romantic things to do in Dubai for couples. For a memorable and romantic dining experience, eat at Ce La Vi for breathtaking views of the Burj Khalifa or defy gravity with your dinner in the sky tickets 50 meters up in the sky at the Dubai International Marine Club. Embark on a cruise in Dubai while idly sailing along the Dubai Marina. For the thrill-seeking duo, exciting experiences like the rides at desert safaris, helicopter rides, and hot air balloon rides await you! And for the art-loving pair visit the Theatre of Digital Art, Dubai’s Design District or the Foundry. There’s something for every kind of couple.

Art & Culture in Dubai

If you’re the kind to explore a city through its artistic and cultural journey, then Dubai will not disappoint in the least. Head to the Dubai Design District for a look into new-age fashion, art, architecture, and so much more. For a more traditional look into the city’s heritage, head to the neighborhood of Al Fahidi and the Dubai Museum. Don’t forget to explore the more popular spots with Museum of the Future tickets, Museum of Illusions Dubai tickets, and Infinity des Lumieres. Be sure to experience Dragone’s curated futuristic performances with your La Perle tickets that promise a series of live artistic performances by 65 artists in, above, and on the water for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Street Food in Dubai

One of the best ways to explore a city is by diving right into its culinary charms, especially some historically tried-and-tested street food. Dubai is plentiful in terms of street food, and you’ll simply not get enough of delicacies like shawarmas, falafels, shish taouk sandwiches, samboosas, and, of course, Oman chips rolls. The best places to enjoy some quick and tasty grub in Dubai are the Global Village, Meena Bazaar, and Bur Dubai.

Climate Overview: Dubai’s weather is largely characterized by its two main seasons - summer and winter. The intensity of the heat is quite high during the summer months, but it dies down to make way for a more pleasant climate during the winter months.
Average yearly temperature: 19° to 36°C or 66° to 97°F
Here’s a detailed breakdown on what to expect through the year:

Dubai in Spring

While Dubai’s spring may not typically look like what you associate springtime to be like, it is nonetheless quite pleasant this time of the year. The months of March and April are quite spring-like in Dubai, with the heat not being at an all-time-high with frequent cool breezes coming your way. This is a great time to go sightseeing without the heat being a bother, as well as a great opportunity to enjoy watersports.

Dubai in Summer

Perhaps the most distinguishable and largely prevailing season in Dubai is its summer. Summer in Dubai can be quite unexpected if you’re not used to the heat, but it is also devoid of tourist crowds as most people avoid heading here during the months of June to September. You can also expect a spike in humidity during this time of the year

Dubai in Autumn

Autumn in Dubai, like spring, is one of the shortest seasons in the city owing to its desert climate. While you may not see the typical autumnal hues in the trees there, you will experience a noticeable drop in the temperature after the harsh heat of the summer. Dubai’s autumn makes it a great time to explore the city in its entirety without the sun’s intensity bearing down on you.

Dubai in Winter

Winter in Dubai is a popular time for tourists to flock to the city, as the temperature is at its annual lowest - making it a perfect opportunity to enjoy everything Dubai has to offer. With the lowest temperature being around 18 to 19°C  on an average, visitors from colder regions find Dubai a great place to be in. However, water parks, pools, and swimming in the sea might feel unpleasant owing to the water’s cold temperature.
While Dubai offers much to do throughout the year, here’s a breakdown of the best time to visit Dubai based on your needs:
  • For Sightseers: If you’re looking to sightsee and explore Dubai at your own pace without having to worry about large tourist crowds and queues everywhere you go, it’s generally a good idea to head there during the summer months as tourists avoid the city altogether or prefer to enjoy indoor attractions while they’re there.
  • For Festival-Goers: Those looking to absorb the city’s rich culture by partaking in its many festivals can head there during the months of March and April, as you’ll have the opportunity to witness Dubai in the midst of Ramadan and also the chance to get yourself some delectable iftar feasts in the evening. This is also a great time to visit Dubai as most tourists, again, avoid traveling there during Eid and Ramadan.
  • For Travelers: For those who simply want to stop at Dubai for a short while before going on to other locations can find the months of April through October particularly appealing, as these months are characterized by low flight ticket prices and hotel room rates.

Wi-Fi and SIM Card

If you would like to stay connected via phone calls, SMSes and internet wherever you decide to head to in Dubai, it is a great idea to purchase a local SIM card instead of using the one from your home country, so as to not burn a whole in your pocket from exorbitant international roaming charges. Du and Etisalat are the only two telecom providers for Wi-Fi and SIM cards in Dubai for you to choose from.
Things to consider:
  • UAE laws permit only one sim per passport for tourists. You need to be at least 18 years of age.
  • Du sim cards and packages are relatively cheaper while travelers prefer Etisalat as it offers better coverage and is the country’s oldest network provider.
  • You can choose a plan ranging from a timeframe of 10 days to 30 days, depending on how long you’re planning to stay in Dubai.
  • Choose between the Regular Pack, Mega Pack, Pro Pack or Ultra Pack that offers talktime ranging from 30 minutes (local and international incoming) to 525 minutes depending on your choice and 2GB to 25GB worth of data depending on your choice.
  • If you don’t foresee yourself using the internet all that much except for some basic requirements, then it is generally a good idea to get a cheaper plan with a low mobile data limit, as you can access free public Wi-Fi in almost all establishments in the city.
  • If you need a SIM card in Dubai urgently, the quickest way to register for and receive one is at the airport after you land - however, this service is only available at the Dubai International Airport.

Daily Budget

  • Average: You can expect to spend around 350 AED (US$95) on an average while you’re in Dubai.
  • Budget: Cost-conscious folk can expect to spend around 291 AED (US$79) while in Dubai without missing out on integral experiences there.
  • Luxury: If budget isn’t a concern, you can expect to spend as much as 1916 AED (US$522) for a truly grand and luxurious trip to Dubai.

Visa

The requirement to secure a visa to travel to Dubai depends on your nationality, as individuals of more than 50 countries including individuals with a US Visa, EU Visa, UK Visa, Australian Visa and more are eligible for a visa on arrival to Dubai. You can opt for either a 24-hour or 96-hour transit visa, or one that’s within the duration of your stay, as long as it is within 180 days.
It is important to check whether your passport is valid for six months when you’re applying for a Dubai visa, while the visa itself should be valid for 60 days from the date of issue (excepting the transit visa, which is only valid for 30 days from the date of issue).

Public Transportation in Dubai

While transportation in Dubai varies in range, public transportation makes up a huge part of Dubai’s commute because of its ease of access and cost-effective nature. You can choose to take the metro, trams, buses, Dubai Abras, and boats to get around the city, with costs starting from 1 AED. Dubai’s public transportation is affordable and accessible, making it easier for you to move around the city even when on a budget.
Things to consider:
  • Getting a Nol card in Dubai is almost indispensable if you’re planning to take public transport at any point of your stay in Dubai. A Nol card ensures that you get around the city at discounted rates without having to buy tickets every time.
  • Taking the bus is a good idea for shorter trips around the city when you’re hopping from one attraction to the next, however, if you’re looking at longer trips in your itinerary then feel free to take the metro for only 3 - 4 AED per zone (or the monorail if you’re not on a tight budget).
  • Paying with cash might not be an option for most means of public transport. Thus, don’t forget to top up your Nol card when frequently using the bus or metro to travel.

Things to know:

  • It is important to be mindful about the way you’re dressing when you’re in Dubai, owing to the largely conservative population of the Middle-East in general. To be cautious and respectful, make sure that your outfit when you’re in public is not too revealing.
  • Tipping is a prevalent custom in Dubai, and it is usually considered uncommon if you do not tip for the services you’ve availed of. Keep around 10 to 15% of the total amount as a tip, preferably in cash.
  • Acts of affectionate display in public are usually frowned upon, while smoking, drinking, and eating in public during Ramadan is considered disrespectful, as it is the month of fasting for Muslims.

Budgeting tips to know:

  • Affordable and Accessible Public Transport: When in Dubai, don’t shy away from opting for public transport. Well-connected, comfortable and cheaper, it’s a sure-shot way of saving up some additional bucks to spend on something better.
  • Pocket-friendly accommodations: You can still enjoy a luxuriously comfortable stay in Dubai without draining your wallet. Along with budget-hotels, keep an eye out for hotel apartments, and apartment rentals should you find yourself staying for an extended period of time.
  • Make Street food your BFF: Dining in Dubai can be an experience regardless of the ambience. Opt for the comfort of street food and enjoy some Middle Eastern fare while touring the city. It’s a treat for your tastebuds and your pocket!
  • Tipple Tips: Look out for happy hours and if you’re a girl, Ladies Night at various bars is the way to go, or enjoy a bottomless brunch, the choice is yours.

These are some of the few Dubai travel tips that you might find helpful to amp up your experience.
